Work-Out Wednesdays-What I do at the Gym-Recumbent Bicycle

I started using the recumbent bicycle when I first joined the gym, about 10 years ago. I used the recumbent bike for the lower back support. The traditional stationary bike offers no back support and my back will usually start hurting within minutes of being on the machine. The recumbent bike is a much better fit for me. I love using the bike because honestly, you get to sit while exercising. I almost feels like cheating. However, I use a pre-set program that changes the intensity throughout the ride, so it is still challenging. I also like the bike because I can read a book while on it, so it really helps the time go by fast. I use the bike once a week for 30 minutes. I usually use it following weight training, which will be my topic for the next Work-Out Wednesday.

  1. I never heard of a recumbent bike - you should post a pic of it. I have back issues at times, so I would probably prefer it, too.

Maybe I'll see one at Rehab. I'm kind of nervous about the machines I'm going to have to use and how hard they'll push me, altho they said they start out very slow and easy.

  2. Thanks, Colleen. I don't think I've ever seen one of those. They look rather comfortable.

  3. I just want to add my quick two cents - these machines do not work for me! My hip grinds and they often hurt my back which I have learned through a Physical Therapist, exercise physiologist/Pilates teacher and working with my own body, is because my spine and pelvis are not in "neutral" meaning maintaining the natural curve of the spine and a level pelvis. Instead, I tend to be in a "tuck" like a dog does when they tuck their tail. I (and everyone for that matter) have to concentrate really hard to keep my whole back and sacrum (pelvis) back against the support and to engage my very deep core (pelvic floor) to prevent my hip from getting out of alignment and grinding. It is nearly impossible with gravity pushing down on us!

Great series Colleen, keep it up! I also see you figured out how to add pages - love it!
